Studio Production

This is a helpline. It's about ears, guiding the project, caring for the people, and planning, planning, planning!

When I began learning audio engineering, I very quickly learnt that all the men like leaning over your shoulder and telling you what you should be doing, without waiting to see if you already know! As there is always so many experts around, I decided to leave them to it, and concentrate on producing sound for them to capture.

Having an understanding of their work makes it easy and supportive, rather than a ramping up of my ego. Whether writing, performing or being The Producer for someone else, I love the process of producing sounds.
If you plan it well, the time spent is much more effective, and much less stressful, so the outcome sounds better.

PLANNING PROCEDURES
Budget. Which studio? Which engineer? How many tracks wanted/needed/available? How many sessions? How many hours? Which hours? Who comes when? Planning post production mixdown, mastering, printing and pressing. AMCOZ royalties. Arranging instrumentation of tracks.
RHYTHM TRACKS
Playing to a click track or not? Bass and percussion. Are they too much? Are they tight and accurate? Fix electronically or live? Does every song need them?
VOCALS
Guide tracks. Pronounciation of vowel sounds - which country does it sound like, y'all? Inclusion of consonants at end of word. Breathing at the right places. Are lyrics understandable on first hearing? If not, is it the arrangement, the mix or the singing? Is the pitching accurate? Harmonies. Do the guitars drown the lyrics like they usually do live?
INSTRUMENTATION
Variety is the spice of sound. Bringing in other instruments for track variety and effectiveness - scored or improvised. Synth sounds or live?
STYLE
Does the idea work well enough? Could it have other "flavours" e.g.tango, afro, etc
LIVE RECORDING
Is this an option. Live plus studio dubs? Which tracks would be better in a studio? Why?
