| When
I was a young woman, my father said to me, "if you don't stop asking
all those smart alec questions, you'll never get a man."
When I was a young woman I thought about this and
said, "if I don't find a man who likes
intelligent questions, wouldn't that be a reason to ask questions?"
When I was a young woman, my father said to me,
"if you don't cross your legs and stop asking smart alec questions,
you'll never get a man."
This made me think of a hundred questions.
I ask you, what did keeping my legs crossed and my mouth shut have to
do with finding the answers?
I ask you, what did keeping my eyes closed and my legs crossed and my
mouth shut and my brain shut down have to do with finding the answers?
I can ask questions from any
position!
Now I'm a little bit older, our
children say to me, "Mummy, why won't grandpa answer any of our questions?
I feel myself smiling with this suggestion: A long time ago he became
afraid. Afraid of the answers, the smart alec answers, dancing around
in his brain.
When I was a young woman, I'm here to say,
I'm allowed to say,
I'm glad to say
My father got it wrong sometimes.
